Jumbled piles of t-shirts do not spark joy.
Anyone who has a pile of t-shirts that are just taking up space in a closet, or under the bed, or box in the attic, or in a dresser drawer. Shirts from sports, schools, clubs, camps, travel, concerts. Shirts you have outgrown. T-shirts your child/brother/grandmother/teenager has collected over the years. Shirts that tell the story of your life! Anyone who can sew in a straight line can make this easy t-shirt quilt!
Yes! This quick t-shirt quilt method works. In Tonya’s Adult School T-Shirt Quilt-in-One-Day class, in 6 hours everyone finishes. Everyone! The only exceptions are when a sewing machine breaks down.
With Joy Lab, you get an experienced instructor who has guided countless students to a successful completed quilt, all in one day. Tonya created this easy t-shirt quilt technique, and has perfected it over the years of teaching the adult school course and in creating her own t-shirt quilts for her family. She knows the common mistakes and realistic short cuts and will guide you to successfully complete your quilt!
Watch video 1 and video 2, then gather your supplies. Watch video 3, then prep your t-shirts while watching your favorite show. Now set aside an entire day. Watch video 4 and optional 5 and cut your t-shirts. Watch video 6 and arrange your t-shirts. Watch video 7 and cut your fleece. Lunch break! Watch video 8 and sew your quilt. Watch video 9 and finish your quilt. Show off your DIY t-shirt quilt at dinnertime!
Squeeze in some time here and there, and you can still finish your t-shirt quilt before too long! Watch one video, do what you are supposed to do, then set it aside for the next time you can work. Sewing the t-shirt quilt (after watching video 8) takes the longest, but you can easily just sew one row at a time.
I’ve made a DIY t-shirt quilt out of only six shirts. My favorite size is 24 shirts. 12, 16, and 20 also work well. I even had one student make a t-shirt quilt with 36 shirts – and she finished her entire t-shirt quilt in one day!
• sewing machine • thread, scissors • rotary cutter, cutting mat • 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 inch square ruler (google The Square Up Quilt Ruler, or ask at quilting shops) • 2 1/2 yards of fleece fabric (58 inch wide) • 12 to 24 t-shirts • band aids
You cut squares, and sew them together, so, yes, it is a t-shirt quilt. You aren't top stitching, and the back side is fleece, so you could call it a t-shirt blanket (if you insist.)
Yes, it’s Chirpy the Cockatiel.
